A LANTERN parade led by two reindeer was one of the highlights of a late-night shopping event in Newmarket on Tuesday.

Newmarket Town Council had organised two lantern-making workshops and those who took part joined the mayor, Cllr Keith Bovill, in the procession from the Memorial Hall to the clock tower where the Christmas tree lights were switched on.

“I must say a huge thank-you to all of the children, their parents and volunteers, who have participated in the two lantern-making workshops and the procession, “ said Cllr Bovill.

“It just goes to show that, with the involvement of the community, you can create a spectacular event at very little expense.”

In The Guineas shopping centre charity organisations ran their own stalls while youngsters visited Father Christmas at the Cambridge Building Society.

Also taking part was the Newmarket Community Choir and pupils from Scaltback Middle School who created the Nativity scene.
